The IDEA indicated in its annual report that democratic institutions were undermined by problems ranging from restrictions on freedom of expression to the questioning of the legitimacy of the elections.

The Institute cited war in Ukraine, inflation, the risks of a global recession, climate change or the coronavirus pandemic as significant challenges.

"The world is facing a multitude of crises, the cost of living, the nuclear conflict and the acceleration of the climate crisis," wrote Idea in its report on the state of democracy in 2022. "and At the same time, we observe a decline in democracies in the world. It is a toxic mixture. "

In his study, Idea takes into account more than a hundred factors such as freedom of expression or the integrity and safety of people.

According to the organization, democracies are threatened by the questioning of the legitimacy of the elections, the restrictions aimed at rights and freedoms, especially online, corruption and the rise of extremes.

IDEA has also observed a stronger repression of any form of dissent on the part of authoritarian regimes. The Institute also noted that more two-thirds of the world's population lived in democracies "returning back" or countries governed by authoritarian regimes.
