It’s not easy – especially on vacation. At least, that’s often the case for vegans when it comes to food. Fortunately, there are now vegan options almost everywhere and apps that spit out the nearest vegan restaurant in seconds. But what do you do when you’re on an island in the Maldives where there are neither supermarkets nor really good vegan options at the food buffet? Clearly: lower your expectations and get inventive!

Whether OmeletMuesli, yogurt, waffles, pancakes, crepes, toast with cold cuts or sweet pastries: Breakfast at the 5-star hotel in the Maldives, where I’m currently vacationing with my family, really leaves nothing to be desired – no one leaves the breakfast room hungry.

Unless, perhaps, you eat a vegan diet.

Breakfast for Champions – but not for vegans

I stroll along the 50-meter-long luxury buffet and my disappointment grows: Of all the fragrant delicacies, truly only cornflakes and fruit would remain for me. The oatmeal is of course served here in Cow’s milk cooked and from plant milk, vegan spreads, tofu & Co. is far and wide nothing to see. Let alone plant yogurt or other breakfast upgrades. But hey, I am finally also on a Island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. I didn’t expect to get the same breakfast offer here as in Berlin-Kreuzberg. And that would be pretty awful, too. But still: A few basics would be nice. Something as simple as oatmeal, for example. At the muesli station, there are four different mueslis – but one look is enough for me to see that the chocolate muesli contains milk chocolate and that the cereals are not vegan either. That leaves cornflakes and rice puffs. And cornflakes with water for Breakfast? With all love. I’ve been through a lot, but I really have little desire to do so.

My family comes back from the buffet and I look a little enviously at their fully loaded plates. Fortunately, I am well prepared and have brought a porridge cup mixture, which is easy to mix with water. The problem: A hot water heater, where you can get water yourself, there is due to Corona hygiene measures no more. So I order a cup of hot water and mix with it my porridge but of course not without being eyed condemningly by the waiter when I tip the cup of water onto my porridge. Although I would really also prefer to solve the situation more elegantly, but hey, at least I’ve had my fill.

Meat instead of vegetables

The other meals are also anything but vegan-friendly. At lunch and dinner so much Meat that it amazes me anew every day. Where do all these masses of meat come from? As already mentioned, we are on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The idea of how many tons of Meat are plastered here every month, I think that’s pretty crass.

20 foods you think are healthy, but aren’t

20 foods you think are healthy, but aren’t Many of us grew up believing that fruit juice and cereal were part of a balanced breakfast, diet sodas could help us lose weight, sports drinks provided a healthy energy boost and a glass of red wine might be good for our hearts. The truth is a little bit more complicated. Let’s learn more about the foods we always believed were healthy, but aren’t.

But I also find it crass that I’m quite a bird of paradise here as a vegan and the whole vegan theme doesn’t really seem to have arrived yet. Of course there are vegetarian options like salads (with yogurt dressing), soups (with cream), vegetable curry (of course also with cream), pizza (with cheese). Vegan are only the side dishes: rice, potatoes, vegetables, pasta, bread. Personally, I’m happy with rice and vegetables, but also happy about the prospect of eating something else after two weeks.

The need for more vegan dishes or options clearly does not seem to be there. I find that quite sad and also somewhat frightening. But again, I have to remind myself that many do not yet have many points of contact with the topic of vegan nutrition – and I am simply in a stark Vegan bubble seem to live. And I would like to emphasize quite clearly that it is an absolute Luxury problem is to complain about the food choices. And yet, it would be so easy to modify the vegetarian options to make them suitable for vegans: Coconut milk instead of cream in the curry, cooking the oatmeal directly with water or plant milk, vinegar-oil dressing instead of yogurt sauces. Easy.

„Necessity“ is the mother of invention

In the meantime, not only my family but also I eat breakfast here quite deluxe. The waiters at breakfast know me by now. When my supply of porridge-Cup was used up, I asked in the morning at the buffet for a portion of oatmeal. For three days, I was (once again) somewhat puzzled by this order. In the meantime, however, the bowl of oatmeal is already waiting for me when I come for breakfast.

And then you have to get a little inventive: Mix the oatmeal with hot water (by now no one looks strange when I order a cup of hot water and then pour it into my bowl), mix it with maple syrup and peanut butter from the waffle station, and top it with fresh fruit and a few cashews from the cereal stand. That’s all I need to start the day full and happy anyway.
