She said in a statement shared to Instagram: "HOW YOU DOIN’? I MISS YOU ALL! As everyone knows, my health has been a hot topic. You're an inspiration Jessica!
In her powerful memoir, 'Open Book', Jessica Simpson addressed her alcohol issues head on in an open and honest account for the first time. Since then, the star has celebrated four years sober and has been praised for her honesty and for highlighting an issue that so many people face. To celebrate the singer’s sobriety let’s take a look at her road to recovery...
-
Childhood trauma
In ‘Open Book’ - which was released in February 2020- Jessica revealed for the first time that she suffered abuse as a girl at the hands of a family friend. The resulting emotional pain, along with other stressors, including career pressures, led her to self-medicate with alcohol and stimulants.
-
The problem
Jessica admitted that she “always had a glitter cup” that she drank out of. Saying in an interview: “It was always filled to the rim with alcohol.” The star who also took pills, said she would start drinking very early in the morning and continue throughout the day. She mentioned in her book she once drank prior to attending her daughter Maxwell’s early morning school event.
-
Admitting she had a problem
Jessica opened up about the moment she realised things began to spiral out of control on the 'Today' show. The star revealed to journalist Hoda Kotb she didn't realise she had a drinking problem until it couldn't be ignored. She recalled: "I had started a spiral and I couldn't catch up with myself … and that was with alcohol. For me to cut back, like I'm an all or nothing girl, and so I didn't know it was a problem until it was."

Rock bottom
In 2017, at a Halloween party at her mansion in Los Angele's Hidden Hills, Jessica hit rock bottom. She and her husband Eric Johnson were getting ready to have people over, however, Jessica had been drinking since 7:30am. Eric asked her if she wanted to get the kids ready and she realized she was not in any state to help. She wrote in her book: “I was terrified of letting them see me in that shape. I am ashamed to say that I don’t know who got them into their costumes that night."
-
Asking for help
Jessica said she asked for help from her friends after the 2017 Halloween bash. Her pals gathered around her in a group hug and haven’t left her side since. The pop star said in her book: “When I finally said I needed help, it was like I was that little girl that found her calling again in life, I found direction and that was to walk straight ahead with no fear.” “Honesty is hard but it’s the most rewarding thing we have and getting to the other side of fear is beautiful.”
-
Therapy
Jessica spent years burying her anxiety and the pain and trauma she had experienced in her childhood. When she decided to get sober, she knew she had to face her demons and challenge them head on. Therapy, she says, was the hard part. As she writes: “With work, I allowed myself to feel the traumas I’d been through.”
-
Sober
Jessica’s driving force to quit drinking was so she could “understand” herself, as well as be a better mother to her and husband Eric Johnson's three children, nine-year-old Maxwell, eight-year-old Ace, and two-year-old Birdie. She said in her book: “I was at that point in my life where my kids were growing older, and they were watching every move that I made.” The star got sober in November 2017 and hasn’t had a drink since. She said: “Giving up the alcohol was easy; I was mad at that bottle. At how it allowed me to stay complacent and numb.”
-
Acceptance
Through hard work the star started to accept herself again and turned her pain into a positive by writing her memoir to share her story with the world and hopefully help others in her situation. She said: “It’s been a long hard deep emotional journey, one that I’ve come through the other side with pure happiness and fulfilment and acceptance of myself. I’ve used my pain and turned it into something that can be beautiful and hopefully inspiring to people.”
-
Support
Jessica has mentioned many times that if it wasn’t for the support of her family and friends through her difficult moments, she couldn’t have become tee total. Next to an Instagram picture of herself, her husband and their kids in 2020, she wrote: “In this ongoing journey to myself I have been holding hearts and hands with these soulmates of mine who have supported me unabashedly through my ups and downs. My gratitude to Eric, Maxi, Ace and Birdie is immeasurable.”
