Virgil Abloh's untimely death has left the fashion industry mourning.

The 41-year-old artistic director of Louis Vuitton Menswear and Off-White founder passed away following an almost two-year battle with cancer.

"Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma," representatives of the late designer said on Instagram.

"He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture."

The Chicago native certainly left an impressive legacy, with his career spanning decades and expansive contributions to fashion, music and art, leaving him one of the greatest creative forces of our generation.

Abloh not only shaped the future of contemporary fashion, but also changed the world for the better, paving the way for emerging creatives and allowing opportunities for marginalised voices in art and design.

His dedication to his craft is truly an inspiration for all.

In honour of Alboh, we're reliving some of his most iconic fashion moments and biggest contributions.

Abloh's signature label, founded in 2013, defined the "grey area between black and white as Off-White™". It might have been a somewhat conceptual framework for a fashion house to be founded on, but Abloh's mission was simple: Off-White™ was merely a vessel for creative pursuits.

And he achieved it. Though it wasn't without controversy, Abloh successfully fused streetwear with haute couture on an unprecedented scale, challenging conventional norms and taking the international fashion circuit by storm.

Off-White™ has become more than just a brand. As a living, breathing ecosystem that encompasses fashion, music, art, design, architecture and then some, the brand has developed its own vocabulary that's become its signature look.

We'll never be able to look at the trademark symbol, quotation marks, zip tie or diagonal arrows the same way ever again. The brand's signature silhouettes are coveted by the celebrity style set and a favourite for fashion fans.

Prior to the start of the pandemic, Abloh took to Paris to present the maison's Fall/Winter 2020 Menswear collection.

Louis Vuitton's signature codes were dialled up to an almost camp level, with functionality and craftsmanship at the forefront of his designs. Set against a sky-blue backdrop, pristine tailored suits and leather engineered bags sauntered down the runway. Abloh closed the show in none other than a trademark hoodie.

Our favourite moment from the show was the gift-with-invite guests received—a Louis Vuitton clock designed to run backwards. While the message was clear, the gift is so poignant given the current circumstances.

Hosted in famed Parisian château, Palais-Royal, Abloh's debut show for Louis Vuitton was a ground-breaking moment for the legacy maison, heralding a new era for the label under the guidance of the first Black artistic director—a multi-coloured runway marked the start of more diverse direction of the brand.

While the garments themselves were iconic in their own right (we're still thinking about Abloh's iridescent Keepall Bandoulière), all eyes were on the celebrity style-set who took to the front row and catwalk for the momentous occasion.

Guests included Kim Kardashian West and then-husband Ye, Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner (who donned a Walter White-esque boilersuit for the occasion), with Kid Cudi and Steve Lacy walking the runway.

Combining creativity, innovation and craftsmanship, Abloh's Fall/Winter 2021 collection for Off-White™ was aptly titled "Laboratory of Fun".

The show marked Abloh's return to IRL showings in Paris, with optimistic hues and utilitarian pieces worn by the likes of Amber Valletta and Joan Smalls.

Virgil Abloh: Promis and colleagues react to the surprising death of the designer

Virgil Abloh: Promis and colleagues react to the surprising death of the designer This death not only shocks the fashion world. Off-White Founder and Louis Vuitton Designer Virgil Abloh is dead. He died on 28 November 2021 at the age of only 41 years at a rare, very aggressive form of cancer. The heart tumor (Cardiales Angiosarcomar) had been diagnosed with more than two years ago, but only close familiar of the designer were informed. The death of the influential fashion designer was announced on Sunday evening on his Instagram profile.

The most memorable looks came from Bella Hadid, who was styled in two iconic dresses, appropriately bookending the show. Hadid opened the collection in azure mini dress and matching patent knee-high boots, before changing into a corresponding evening gown.

The collection also marked the debut of a Frank-esque (the devilish rabbit from 2001 thriller Donny Darko) face mask, with the masquerade worn by Abloh himself at the 2021 Met Gala.

At the Spring/Summer 2019 Ready-To-Wear Off-White™ collection, Abloh merged fashion and athleisure.

In another iconic opening, Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner gave us a twin moment, strutting down the industrial-style track in matching white ensembles.

Athletic motifs seen on the runway included several sets of Nike socks woven into a vest, worn by Kaia Gerber, and a pair of high-heel high-top sneaker hybrid styled by our very own Georgia Fowler.

This was a masterful synergy between contemporary design and activewear.

While at first glance you could mistake the set for a chess board, Abloh's Fall/Winter 2019 presentation was an exploration of "suburban America", as the designer told Vogue.

The check pattern was symbolic of the checked flag waved at the end of a derby race, with the classic pattern a signature for the brand.

While the first half of the collection was symbolic of Abloh's codes, including low-top sneakers, soft as butter leather and new-wave puffer jackets (our favourite is Look 29, a psychedelic yellow and grey mesh check bodysuit and denim jeans), the back half of the show was Abloh's take on red carpet dressing.

I know that but I still can’t help but ask why,” the Skims founder wrote via Instagram on Monday, November 29. “Why Virgil?! Why him so soon? it’s simply hard to understand why. I have a hard time understanding why so many pure souls were taken away so early.

Adut Akech wore a billowing checked gown, adorned with the phrase Off-White™ "PATTERN", with Gigi and Bella closing the show in a draping black gown and oversized cape respectively.

“Social Distancing” c/o Abloh Engineering

Putting his Civil Engineering degree to good use, Abloh pimped Drake's ride in 2020—a multi-million private jet draped exclusively in Abloh's designs.

A 1-of-1 custom creation, the pair dubbed the project "Social Distancing" c/o Abloh Engineering, because there was no better way to escape the crowds than in a converted Boeing 767.

Air Drake was wrapped in a sky blue cloud print, perfectly for camouflaging when you're 30,000 feet above ground.

Virgil Abloh “Figures Of Speech”

In 2019, Abloh released a chronicle of his life's work, titled "FIGURES OF SPEECH". The almost-500-page almanac featured 1,800 never-before-seen images pulled from Abloh's archives, with the catalogue covering his work and inspiration in-depth.

The book is iconic in its own right, serving as more of an art piece than a bestseller. The cover features an incredibly meta image of Abloh holding a "PERSONAL COPY" of the book, complete with a tape measure as a bookmark.

As part of the body of work, Abloh curated an accompanying art exhibition at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, with the artworks spanning 20 years of his career, including unreleased prototypes, sketches and installations.

The exhibition travelled to Doha in October, with Abloh making one of his final public appearances at the opening of the show.

IKEA MARKERAD

As a multi-hyphenate creative, Abloh's collaboration with Swedish furniture brand IKEA is a standout.

According to IKEA, the limited edition capsule "takes minimalist designs and builds on them with the artistic references and subversive elements typical of Virgil's work".

Everyday essentials from chairs to clocks were elevated with an unexpected twist, from an oversized rug styled after an IKEA receipt to a dysfunctional mirror labelled "DISTORTION".

The collection was. quickly snapped up. Fans lauded the pieces for Abloh's distinct style and unique vision.

"TILL DEATH DO US PART"

Arguably one of the most iconic wedding dresses of all time, Hailey Bieber's stunning Off-White™ lace gown is one for the history books.

Whilst being simultaneously unconventional and traditional, Abloh's spin on wedding attire featured a notable aesthetic element, a veil marked with Bieber's vows "Till Death Do Us Part".

Other motifs included the trademark diagonally symbol, intricately woven with pearl detailing.

Abloh's passing is indeed a tragedy. While he achieved so much in his almost 15-year career, we're truly saddened by the fact we won't ever know what else he could have achieved. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
