The spectacular Commonwealth Games, which take place every four years, are happening in England this week, and we're expecting plenty of royal family appearances.

The multi-sport event, which was debuted in 1930, celebrates the diversity, humanity, and skill of the 56 Commonwealth member states. Often referred to as the "Friendly Games," their aim is to unite the nations and inspire athletes to compete in the spirit of friendship.

When are the Commonwealth Games happening?

Where will they take place?

The event will be based in Birmingham this year, with the opening ceremony kicking off at the city's Alexander Stadium. Sporting competitions will also take place at venues such as the NEC Arena, Arena Birmingham, and the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Which royals will be in attendance?

Prince Charles and Prince Edward attended the opening ceremony today, and BAZAAR.com has learned that Prince William and Kate Middleton are set to make an appearance at the games on August 2. Queen Elizabeth II will not be present at the event due to her ongoing mobility issues.

Duchess Camilla, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Princess Anne will also attend certain sporting events throughout the tournament.

What sporting events will there be?

Over 4,500 athletes of all genders—and including some with disabilities—will take part in competitions in diving, swimming, track and field, and cricket, among other sports.

How can you watch the games?

As is custom, the Commonwealth Games will be broadcast on BBC. Viewers can follow the events on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, and BBC iPlayer.
