Before the pandemic, national food insecurity levels were the lowest they had been in 20 years. But the COVID-19 pandemic shifted that downward trend—in 2020, more than 38 million individuals, including nearly 12 million children, lived in food-insecure households, up from 35 million in 2019. And unfortunately, things haven’t yet improved. The inflation we’ve all seen at the grocery store is hitting every community, but households with kids and seniors face hunger at higher rates than others, and people of color and those who live in rural areas are facing impossible choices between buying food and paying for other needs like medicine and electricity.

Goodbye to Mission Chinese Food and Its Complicated NYC Legacy

Goodbye to Mission Chinese Food and Its Complicated NYC Legacy So much of restaurant culture can be traced back to the early popularity of Danny Bowien's game-changing Mission Chinese Food. Its last New York location closes this week, leaving behind a complicated legacy and a trail of scarred workers.I had not experienced the early days myself. By 2015, when I started working in food media, Mission was on its second iteration in New York, operating on the Lower East Side near a buzzy area that's now both lovingly and disparagingly called Dimes Square.

In fact, nearly half of Feeding America’s food banks have seen an increase in the number of people served in recent months. “Food insecurity may be long term or temporary, but the resulting health impacts can endure—leading to, or exacerbating, health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure,” says Casey Marsh, chief development officer at Feeding America.

When you donate, you are supporting a nationwide network of 200 food banks, 21 state associations, and 60,000 partner food pantries and meal programs, Marsh explains: “Feeding America turns $1 into at least 10 meals by working with manufacturers and retailers to donate food that would otherwise go to waste.” Plus, it’s focused on nutrition: Last year, the Feeding America network secured more than 2.2 billion pounds of fruits and vegetables for families facing hunger, and 71% of foods distributed by Feeding America are classified as promoting good health. Access to nutritious food is an important arm of the food security tree—children facing hunger are more likely to be in poor health and struggle in school, and older adults who lack regular access to healthy food are less likely to thrive or be able to manage existing health needs.
