Everyone knows them, everyone hates them and yet we need them like the air we breathe: Annoying clientele and useless everyday objects that you can really get angry about – that’s where it goesZEITjUNG authorsnot otherwise. That’s why we let our anger in the series „hate object“ just let loose and exaggeratedly get into a rage. One thing is certain: nothing is sacred to us and no one is spared. This time on the hit list: Sunday, 5 p.m.

It’s Sunday at 4 p.m. I’m standing on the platform and using sign language to communicate confused stuff through the train window, behind which my best friend from Switzerland has just taken a seat. The train starts moving and interrupts our lively discussion of eye rolling, pinching our noses, silent laughter and simulated tears. With a short wave I say goodbye to my visit and my good mood.

Party corpses and squishy confetti

I slowly make my way home. I’m missing one on purpose Subway and let the weekend pass in review again, until I finally dare to go to my apartment. As feared, it is dark and empty, only the huge chaos in my room still bears witness to eventful days. I sigh and look at my phone: 5 p.m.

The energy is down, the mood too. The whole rambazamba of the weekend falls apart and stays in front of me like a poor party corpse the day after. What remains feels like confetti on dirty cobblestones. I’m tuning in to Mumford & Sons‘ Woman and I’m just not sure what to do with myself. Sunday, 5 p.m. What a waste of time! The last hours of the weekend, like a bitter reprieve, taunting us because the end is coming anyway. Everyone is at home with their families or in their heads, it’s already too late to start something new, it’s far too early to just lie down in bed. I feel like the only person who doesn’t have a plan.

Edward VIII's letter to his mother hours after heartbreaking abdication finally revealed

Edward VIII's letter to his mother hours after heartbreaking abdication finally revealed EXCLUSIVE: The incredible handwritten letter, published here for the first time, shows that Queen Elizabeth II's uncle had known of his plans to abdicate for two years before making his final decision 86 years ago to this day.In the emotional letter to his mother, Mary of Teck, Edward also throws his support behind his younger brother and then future King, George VI - who he refers to as 'Bertie' - to whom he "left the crown and the throne as Papa left it, on the same high level it has maintained for so many centuries".

We are alone together

And that’s not me at all: According to one opinion poll German and Swedish researchers, almost half of Germans suffer from this grueling Sunday blues. It hits the worst apparently the academics and business leaders who are driven insane by the inactivity on a Sunday evening. I get it. I’m also happy to know that I’ll be back among people and meaningfully occupied in 16 hours at the latest. With the prospect that tomorrow will be a new day, yes, a fresh week, with a new weekend, I try to face my loneliness.

I rummage in my brain for things I enjoy doing that don’t involve other people. Drinking tea, writing in a diary, listening to audio books and drawing, reading, tidying up, sorting. But I don’t like being alone. I can do it, being alone, going to the cinema alone and doing things for myself, but I don’t like it. Or only rarely. I do want to learn to find a place within myself that is sufficient for itself, but I accept that I would still choose company anyway.

The Friday 5 p.m. magic

The moment the water for tea is bubbling and the colored pencils are fished out of the drawer, the phone rings and I am immensely relieved. My mum always knows how to pull me out of the depths of loneliness – even by my hair if need be. She tells me the fairy tale of Cinderella: how she turns into a beautiful princess just in time for the weekend and becomes a maid again on Sunday evening. I think: Well, if she didn’t have Sunday night blues! And feel a little comforted. Sunday, 5 p.m.: This is probably the moment when the Friday, 5 p.m. magic dissolves and everything steers towards everyday life again.
