At summer’s onset, I failed in my quest for the perfect men’s sandal. Some fine Dries Van Noten numbers on deep discount in an SSense sale (one very large pair remains available, as of writing) did not fit and had to return home to Canada. A pair of leather platforms, from a brand which shall go unnamed, arrived less appealing to the eye than they appeared online. Rather than sending those back, I languished in my nonsuccess until the return window’s latch firmly closed. I have yet to wear them outside of my apartment. But you need not suffer defeat as I have—from my mistakes, I've learned what to look for in a sandal.
The shoe, after all, is a tricky one: More than any other, it exposes one’s foot. It puts the toes on display and introduces them to the world. Socks are discouraged, but optional. Despite often being lumped into one disorganized category on shopping sites, the sandal extends a sprawling umbrella out above a vast population of styles; some are multi-purpose, while others are best suited to a particular type of trip. When shopping, consider its use: Will it be left on the beach, or accompany you into the water? Are you going for an easy stroll or a miles-long hike? Is dinner a quick pick-up from the deli down the block or a luxuriant dockside feast on a breezy late August evening? Are you even leaving the house? For all of these occasions, abundant options await.

Fisherman sandals reign in both this category and the one that follows, a testament to the twins behind The Row and their taste for utility refined. If the Olsens and their wares stand outside of your price point, however, options abound from Mephisto and Kurt Geiger. These hearty shoes at once protect the feet and allow them to breathe, and are just as suitable for summertime office days as for sidewalk strolls and casual dinners. Should you find the style too objectionable, Birkenstocks continue their reign as the most casual sandal of all time. Dress the classic cut up slightly in black suede, or go all the way with the brand's Dior collaboration—gray felted wool and calfskin galore.
Jennifer Lopez Sold Out This Sleek, Barely There Sandal, but You Can Get the Look Starting at $4
Including the classic flip-flops over 2,500 people love.Jennifer Lopez is always proving that style and comfort can go hand-in-hand; just last week she was spotted having a high-low moment while honeymooning in Paris with new hubby Ben Affleck. Lopez paired a floral Oscar De La Renta dress that retails for $2,290 with all-white $55 Tkees flip-flops for the occasion — and of course she sold the sleek sandals out.
For life’s more formal occasions, some might recommend that you put your feet away entirely. This need not be. While flip flops and the like certainly have no place at a nice dinner or a beach wedding, the lustrous leather pieces put out by brands at all price points bring luxury to the table without closing the toe. The aforementioned fisherman sandal can step up to the plate here as seen with Mezlan’s very chic polished shoe. Dressed-up slides also suit—Bloomingdales touts a Bruno Magnoli pair in a rich chocolate brown, while Vince Camuto’s offerings at DSW are the most low-key. For the boldest: vegetable-tanned leather, hand-cut and hand-woven in Mexico to an all-but-closed genuine huarache, composes Yuketen’s Cruz sandal.

Hiking and sport sandals
I crossed Crete in Hurricane Verge Tevas last summer. I hiked in them and swam in them and climbed all over the place and not once did my ankles roll—they’re lightweight and waterproof, easy to travel with, and sleek enough to wear to town in a pinch. If you desire even greater security and support in your next pair of men's summer sandals, look into the Universal Leather Sandals.
Just as I am loyal to Teva, many pledge allegiance to Chaco. Huckberry’s latest endeavor with the brand, the Tarpon, embraces a scaly pattern on its criss-crossing straps. Nike’s low-top sandals are lightweight while offering a chunkier look.

While strapping into a waterproof shoe is indeed ideal for hiking, Velcro and sand mix perhaps a little too easily. The beach sandal is best slipped on and off. If you must wear a flip flop, opt for the clean neutral leather of the classic Rainbow. They only get better with age, darkening beautifully with texture and wear brought by the elements. Thongs are not for everyone, however, and those who wish to move more discreetly along the shore can always snatch up Crocs. As popular as ever, the iconic hole-punched clog boasts an all-terrain model for ultimate traction. Freedom Moses slides, made of rubber with faux buckle straps adorning the two bands and the brand’s signature milk and honey scent faintly present, are the most elegantly easy option of all.
Having worn my roommate’s house shoes, the Cushionaire Feather slides, to do laundry while my own slippers sat out of sight under my bed, they come with this writer’s unequivocal recommendation. They are clouds on your feet, so light and porous that you sink ever so slightly into them. For something firmer, Hoka Ora Recovery slides come in a dazzling rainbow of colors.
