Two RCMP officers appeared to collapse as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was giving a speech in Regina Friday morning.

Trudeau was naming Brenda Lucki as the RCMP's first permanent female commissioner. During the speech at the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina, two officers standing behind the podium could be seen falling over during the announcement.

The press conference started around 11:15 a.m. ET and lasted around 45 minutes.

“It’s very common for members to faint on parade,” RCMP sergeant major, Tammy Patterson said. “You’re standing still, the blood is not circulating, it’s not getting up to your brain. And your brain is telling you to faint I guess.”

She said although it’s typical to happen to RCMP, there are “tricks” to prevent this, such as moving your feet and squeezing your calves to get the circulation going.

“Of course they were standing right behind the prime minister…so they were trying not to move and fidget,” Patterson said. “They were trying their very best, I could imagine, to look great as a backdrop. But those things happen.”
