What to Know About Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses Controversy
The author has written many well-regarded novels, but his fifth, The Satanic Verses, was the subject of global controversy when Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini placed a fatwa on him calling for his assassination , with a bounty for whomever executed it. Rushdie had to go into hiding in the immediate aftermath, and lived under the death threat until 1998, when the Iranian government said it would no longer enforce the fatwa (though it remained active). At the time the fatwa was issued, Rushdie, himself Muslim by birth, said to Britain's Press Association, ''It is not true this book is a blasphemy against Islam.
The 75-year-old Rushdie has been persecuted by religious fanats for decades. Because of his Works "The Satanian Verses" from 1988 had the then Iranian revolutionary leader AJ Atollah Chomeini called to kill rush. He accused him of insulting Islam, the Prophet and the Koran. On Friday, Rushdie was attacked by a man at an event in Chautauqua in the west of the US state of New York and has been treated in a hospital in the adjacent Pennsylvania since then. The police have not yet confirmed a motif.
"Especially state Iranian institutions have called on generations to violence against rush, and state media recently delighted the attack on his life. This is despised," emphasized the US Foreign Minister. The USA and its partners opposed such threats. Rushdie's own strength steels the determination of the United States and shows the need to act as an international community against those who questioned general rights.

MAYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — The criminal case against the man charged with stabbing author Salman Rushdie involves so much potential evidence that prosecutors need more time to review it, the chief prosecutor said Wednesday. District Attorney Jason Schmidt of Chautauqua County in western New York said his office is reviewing about “30,000 files,” without providing details. He said the volume of material entitled him to additional time to comply with a requirement to turn over evidence to suspect Hadi Matar's attorney. Matar’s lawyer, Nathaniel Barone, questioned the need for delay. Prosecutors typically must share evidence within 20 days of an arraignment.
