Offbeat: Federal Government wants to act more against anti -Semitism

Here's what the Emergencies Act says — and the powers Ottawa invoked last winter

Here's what the Emergencies Act says — and the powers Ottawa invoked last winter OTTAWA — A public inquiry is underway to determine whether the federal government was justified in its invocation of the Emergencies Act last winter during the "Freedom Convoy" protests. After dozens of witnesses gave testimony and hundreds of sensitive documents were submitted into evidence, the Public Order Emergency Commission began its final week of hearings Monday. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other high-ranking cabinet members are expected to appear next.

The federal government wants to act more against hate on Jews and promote Jewish life in Germany. A "national strategy against anti -Semitism and for Jewish life in Germany" is to be decided on Wednesday in the federal cabinet. This is intended to make the reality of Jewish people more visible and prevent anti-Semitism, as the Funke newspapers reported. "Jews should be sure of the support of the federal government and the population," says the paper.

anti -Semitism threatens democracy as a whole, so it is a permanent social task to combat it. According to the report, the paper contains a total of five fields of action. This includes data collection and research, education as anti -Semitism prevention, culture of remembrance and history, repressive anti -Semitism fighting and security as well as Jewish present and history. In addition, three "cross -sectional dimensions" would be emphasized: perspective of affected, structural formation and digitality. These should be considered when processing the individual fields of action. For each of these fields of action, the strategy paper presents various possible or already implemented measures and goals of the federal government for each of these fields of action. This includes, for example, optimizing the exchange of scientific data on the subject of anti -Semitism and networking at European level or improving the imparting of knowledge about Israel and Judaism in schools.

In addition, the Federal Government wants to promote memorial sites, among other things, and strengthen historical awareness - for example by increasing the time of National Socialism in courses. After all, the Jewish community in Germany is also to be strengthened, for example through the support of Jewish institutions, organizations and initiatives, as the Funke newspapers further reported from paper. This point results from the "special historical responsibility of Germany".
