Sports: Rangers' Ryan Reaves might not miss Opening Night

Sharks engaging in extension talks with forward Tomas Hertl

Sharks engaging in extension talks with forward Tomas Hertl While Sharks center Tomas Hertl is a highly-speculated candidate to be traded this season, San Jose GM Doug Wilson has other plans.  Speaking with reporters including Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now, Wilson indicated that extension talks are well underway: © Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports I’ve had several conversations with his agent. And when you have conversations with agents, they’re always kept in confidence. The rhythm of the negotiation, the time and place of it. Tomas knows how we feel about him.

Despite suffering an injury on Wednesday night that forced him to be helped off the ice, New York Rangers free-agent addition Ryan Reaves might not miss any regular-season time. The grinder has not been practicing since the injury occurred, but head coach Gerard Gallant is optimistic that he could return by opening night. “I think it’s going to be close,” Gallant told Collin Stephenson on Newsday. “When we left the game, I said no, but . . . the last couple of days it’s going in the right direction… I can’t really say, but I think it’s going to be real close.” The Rangers prioritized adding grit and physicality this summer, adding Reaves, Barclay Goodrow, Sammy Blais and Patrik Nemeth, so they hope to be able to roll out their full complement of toughness for Opening Night.

Travis Hamonic yet to join Canucks due to family health concerns

Travis Hamonic yet to join Canucks due to family health concerns Training camp is well underway but the Vancouver Canucks are still awaiting the arrival of veteran defenseman Travis Hamonic. Now, with the deadline to opt out of the coming season arriving on Friday, the team is left to wait to see if they will have the reliable blue liner back after extending him this off-season. Yet, it appears that they will remain patient and calm with Hamonic, who has family concerns to take into account with his decision.

  • Sam Bennett missed the Florida Panthers' preseason matchup on Saturday night as he has been placed in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol, the team announced. Depending on the context of Bennett’s absence, the two-way forward could miss more than just one game. The Panthers certainly hope that the physical center is good to go for the start of the season; Bennett was an excellent addition to the Florida roster at the deadline last season, recording 15 points in 10 games while averaging a career-high 18:04 time on ice. As the Cats look to compete in the Atlantic Division this year, every game matters, and a healthy Bennett is a difference-maker.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins expect to have Jake Guentzel back sooner rather than later from COVID protocol. Head coach Mike Sullivan told The Athletic’s Rob Rossi that Guentzel is asymptomatic and going through the steps of the protocol. Even though he has missed a week of practice, Guentzel will jump right back into the lineup if he is healthy. The 27-year-old has scored at a point-per-game pace over the past three seasons and will be relied on even more with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin injured.

Canadiens' Jonathan Drouin out with non-COVID illness

Canadiens' Jonathan Drouin out with non-COVID illness A non-COVID-related illness will prevent Jonathan Drouin from playing in Thursday's preseason game. While the team hasn’t given any further information on Drouin’s health, a preseason absence from a guaranteed roster player usually isn’t too much to worry about. With the Habs already entering the season with a depleted roster, the full health of their players is of utmost priority right now, so Drouin’s absence can best be predicted as precautionary.

Aube-Kubel earns the max fine despite only garnering a minor penalty for the play. The hit in question occurred early in the third period and was only called a trip on the ice, resulting in a two-minute minor penalty. With the puck in the Panthers’ zone and Marchment attempting to settle the puck in front of his own net, Aube-Kubel came from the corner with speed and hit Marchment, drawing an immediate whistle (video). While Marchment was shaken up on the play, he did return to the game and played a number of shifts in the remainder of Florida’s 4-2 win.
