Looking back at the embarrassment of riches in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft first round

Looking back at the embarrassment of riches in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft first round Five players selected that night went on to appear in at least 1,000 NHL games, including Penguins icon Sydney Crosby. With the lack of regular-season standings to determine the draft order, the league implemented a snake draft system to make things more equitable for teams in later rounds that didn’t fare so well in the draft lottery. One team that did fare well that night, though, was the Pittsburgh Penguins, who cemented a 15-plus year run of success by drafting future captain Sidney Crosby with the first overall pick.

Flames re-sign Andrew Mangiapane to three-year, $17.4M deal

Flames re-sign Andrew Mangiapane to three-year, $17.4M deal Mangiapane brings durability and stability to the Flames lineup.By signing Mangiapane, Calgary is effectively buying out two years of unrestricted free agency, as the 26-year-old was set to hit the open market next summer. After having star forward Johnny Gaudreau leave via free agency and Matthew Tkachuk announce that he would not re-sign in Calgary after next season, forcing a trade, having some certainty with one of their other key forwards and goal scorers is surely a relief for the Flames. Although the signing leaves them with very little cap space, it completes all pending arbitration cases, meaning their offseason work is likely complete.

When does the Champions League group stage start?

Just a couple of weeks after the group stage draw, the first matchday will take place on Sept. 6-7 as all six rounds of games take place before the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Blackhawks place former first-rounders Brett Connolly, Henrik Borgstrom on waivers

Blackhawks place former first-rounders Brett Connolly, Henrik Borgstrom on waivers The two forwards actually arrived in Chicago the same way, through a trade with the Florida Panthers in 2021 that saw Lucas Wallmark and Lucas Carlsson go the other way. While Riley Stillman remains from that deal, it was Borgstrom that was considered a big part of the return, having been a first-round pick by the Panthers in 2016. After just 52 games with Chicago he’ll hit the market as an unrestricted free agent, an interesting addition just before things open up on Wednesday.

Players are required to be released to their national teams for the World Cup on Monday, Nov. 14, and the final Champions League group matches will take place about two weeks before on Nov. 1-2.

The Champions League group stage typically includes a December round of matches, but that was moved up due to the World Cup schedule. The 2022 edition will be the first World Cup held in November-December timeframe.

How Champions League places are determined

Every year, UEFA shuffles the deck using updated UEFA country coefficient rankings to determine how many spots in cup competitions are assigned to each country. The UEFA club coefficient rankings are different and are used to determine seeds throughout the competition.

The country rankings are calculated each year based on how all teams from each domestic league perform in European competition.

It is no surprise that England is the top-ranked nation in the country coefficient list, with an English club winning two of the last four Champions League titles through 2021/22, and seeing four different clubs reach the final across the last four competitions.

Spain, Italy, and Germany round out the top four nations, and each of those leagues earn four Champions League places due to their standing.

Nations ranked No. 5 and No. 6 in the country coefficient list, France and Portugal, earn three places with the third-place teams entering in the qualifying rounds. Nations ranked No. 7 through No. 15 have two Champions League places each, including the qualifying rounds.

What happens if the Champions League winners also qualify via their domestic league?

The Champions League winners are guaranteed a place in next season's competition regardless of their domestic league finish.

If a team wins the competition and also qualifies via their domestic league finish, that does not mean that another club from the country gets a spot in the Champions League.

Instead, the highest-ranked nation in the country coefficient list without a club in the group stage would be bumped up, and their champion would go directly into the group stage.

Since Real Madrid won the Champions League title in 2021/22 and also topped La Liga in Spain, the extra automatic berth to the group stage went to the next nation in the country coefficient list (Ukraine) given Russia was banned from competing in 2022/23. That meant an automatic group-stage berth for Shakhtar Donetsk instead of having to navigate the qualifying stages.

With Ukraine bumped up, the rest of the competition is reconfigured in a similar fashion, with each nation bumped up to a higher round. For example, Shakhtar's spot in the playoff round was consequently taken by Denmark's champion FC Copenhagen, with the next country in line taking the spot vacated by FC Copenhagen. And the trickle effect is applied to the rest of the tournament.

How does Russia's ban affect Champions League places?

Due to the war in Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA announced in February that Russia would be indefinitely banned from competition on both an international and a club level. On May 2, UEFA announced that Russian clubs were disqualified from competing in the 2022/23 editions of all European tournaments.

With Russia's two slots vacated, it left one gap in the group stage and one gap in the third qualifying round. The group stage place was filled by the highest-ranking qualifier left in the playoff round (Scotland's league champion).

That, ironically enough, put Ukraine next in line to get a group stage spot when Real Madrid won the 2021/22 tournament and also qualified from its league. So in addition to Scotland, Ukraine was the biggest beneficiary of Russia's exclusion.

Ukraine's own places in the competition took some resolving, as the league was suspended on Feb. 24 due to the war, and it was officially abandoned on April 26. The Ukrainian Football League decided to award its two Champions League places to the top two teams in the table as of the suspension of the league, with Shakhtar Donetsk in first and Dynamo Kyiv in second.

Where is the Champions League final 2023?

All roads during the 2022/23 tournament will lead to Turkey.

The 2023 final is due to be played at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, a place which holds special memories for Liverpool.

The venue was the location for their famous 2005 Champions League triumph, where they fought back from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties.
