Defending champions Manchester City are off to a perfect start to their 2022/23 Premier League season with two wins in two matches and no goals conceded. And the only team that has been able to keep pace with them thus far is Arsenal, also on six points.

Tottenham Hotspur could join them with a victory over London rivals Chelsea on Sunday in the marquee matchup of the round.

Newcastle, Leeds, and Brighton have continued to rack up points over the first two matchdays, while on the opposite extreme Everton are still stuck on zero points after two matches with Frank Lampard promising squad changes over the two weeks to come ahead of the close of the transfer window.

Flames re-sign Andrew Mangiapane to three-year, $17.4M deal

Flames re-sign Andrew Mangiapane to three-year, $17.4M deal Mangiapane brings durability and stability to the Flames lineup.By signing Mangiapane, Calgary is effectively buying out two years of unrestricted free agency, as the 26-year-old was set to hit the open market next summer. After having star forward Johnny Gaudreau leave via free agency and Matthew Tkachuk announce that he would not re-sign in Calgary after next season, forcing a trade, having some certainty with one of their other key forwards and goal scorers is surely a relief for the Flames. Although the signing leaves them with very little cap space, it completes all pending arbitration cases, meaning their offseason work is likely complete.

Below is the full Premier League table followed by a snapshot of each race as of last season's conclusion while we await for the first matchweek of 2022/23 to be played out in its entirety.

Premier League title race

Last season's Premier League title charge was thrilling, as Manchester City finished just one point ahead of Liverpool in a race that came down to the final matchday of the season.

Report: Bruins, David Krejci negotiating potential return to Boston

Report: Bruins, David Krejci negotiating potential return to Boston After spending a year playing overseas, it appears as though David Krejci may be on his way back to Boston. © Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports Center David Krejci. Multiple reports, including one from Kevin Weekes of ESPN, indicate that Krejci is currently in negotiations with the Bruins to re-join the team for 2022-23. General manager Don Sweeney admitted he had been in touch with the veteran forward a few days ago but wouldn’t go so far as to say contract negotiations were underway at that point.

This year, the title race is projected to be a two-horse race between those aforementioned teams, unless someone else proves they can hang with the giants. Tottenham appears the early favorite to give Man City and Liverpool a challenge, but Arsenal and Manchester United have also improved this summer.

Conversely, there are doubts about whether Chelsea can hang on to its Top 4 place this season, and will need to make a serious statement before fans believe they can make a case for the top spot.

Champions League places: Top 4 chase

In addition to the two title challengers, Chelsea and Tottenham secured the final two Champions League places last season, coming in third and fourth.

Teams reportedly debating signing Stars' Jake Oettinger to offer sheet

Teams reportedly debating signing Stars' Jake Oettinger to offer sheet The young goaltender showed this postseason that he is ready to step into the limelight as a star, posting a .954 save percentage in seven games, almost dragging the Stars past the Calgary Flames in the first round by himself. With Jason Robertson also a restricted free agent and a few other spots to fill, the Stars have a limited amount of cap flexibility to work with, which could make an Oettinger offer sheet more appealing for some teams. It doesn’t make much sense to sign a player to one without real hope that it might not be matched.

This campaign, the two clubs appear headed in opposite directions. Tottenham looked like one of the league's best teams through the second half of last season, and a successful summer has Spurs looking like the leader for the table's third spot. Chelsea, meanwhile, are a squad in transition, and an unkind preseason stoked fears that the Blues could drop out of the coveted Top 4.

Those looking to take advantage of any missteps include Arsenal and Manchester United who have both improved this summer and could look for an early surge to gain an advantage.

Premier League European places

In the English top flight for 2022/23, in addition to the four Champions League spots, there are three other berths to European competitions:

  • Europa League (2 berths): One automatically goes to the 5th-place Premier League team, and the other goes to the FA Cup winner. But if the FA Cup winner finishes in the Top 5, then the Europa League berth granted via the FA Cup will transfer to the next highest table finisher not already qualified for the Europa League.
  • Conference League (1 berth): This goes to the EFL Cup winner (Carabao Cup). However, if the EFL Cup winner already qualifies for the Champions League or Europa League, then the Conference League berth transfers to the next highest table finisher not already qualified for European competition.

Last season, Arsenal confirmed a Europa League berth with a fifth-place finish.

Premier League relegation

As always, the bottom three teams in the Premier League are relegated to the second tier the following season, a massive blow that clubs look to avoid at all costs.

Last season, Burnley, Watford, and Norwich City finished in the relegation zone and all three teams are playing in the second division during this campaign. In their places rose Fulham, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest, who will hope to earn a more permanent place in the top flight.

Leeds United, Everton, and Southampton barely escaped the drop last season and will hope this year is a little more comfortable. Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford could also be swept into the relegation battle with any sustained dry spells.
