Malaysian rescuers have ceased To search for bodies in the debris of an unauthorized campsite, ravaged by a landslide Friday December 16, which left 31 dead, the authorities announced on Saturday.

According to the police, 92 people, including dozens of children, were on the spot, most of them asleep, when tons of mud and earth have descended a hill, near the city of Batang Kali, on the outskirts of the capital Kuala Lumpur.

All the dead are Malaysians. Eleven children are among them. Seventy-one people could be rescued.

"We found the last body, that of a boy," a rescuers' official, Hafisham Mohamad Noor told AFP.

"We will end our research and rescue operations," he added.

Nearly 700 people from different government agencies and emergency services, equipped with police dog dogs and earthmoving machines, searched the debris and the muddy soil where the campsite was established in search of survivors and of body.

many of the victims were families who came to rest for the end -of -year holidays.

According to the authorities, the campsite operated without a license and its operators will be punished if their responsibility in the accident is proven.

The landslides are common in Malaysia, where heavy rains fall regularly at the end of the year.

No episode of strong precipitation had however been recorded in the area where the disaster occurred.

In March, four people lost their lives in another landslide caused by important rains and who had buried their houses in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur.

In 1993, a huge mud flow driven by torrential rains caused the collapse of a 12 -storey residential building near the capital, killing 48 people in one of the worst natural disasters in Malaysia.

BATANG KALI, Malaysia (AP) — Rescuers on Saturday found the bodies of a woman and two children, raising the death toll from a landslide on an unlicensed campground in Malaysia to 24 with nine others still missing. Selangor state fire chief Norazam Khamis told reporters the bodies of a mother and son were found buried under a meter (3 feet) of mud and debris. The body of a little girl was discovered later. He said there was hope of finding survivors if they clung on to piles or branches or rocks with pockets of air but that chances were slim.
