The story of Little Mix...
When Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall all auditioned on 'The X Factor' as solo singers back in 2011 it’s safe to say that they had no idea that 10 years later they would be the world’s top girl band consistently at the top of the charts. But their rise to the top hasn’t been without its controversies, let’s revisit some of their highs and lows…
A winning formula
The girls made history when they were crowned the winners of the eighth series of 'The X Factor' in 2011 becoming the first group to win the singing competition. With their mentor Tulisa by their side, the group released a cover of Damien Rice’s 'Cannonball' as their winner’s single which took them straight to the top of the charts. The fresh-faced girls we’re ready to take on the world!
Jesy's trolling hell
Fresh out of the contest, one member in particular had to deal with the harshest critics as Jesy Nelson was subject to vile trolling right from the off in the band. Jesy received comments from her differing appearance and suffered at the hands of multiple keyboard warriors but she ultimately came out fighting, channeling all the negativity into her music and performances.
Debut album success
The girls released their highly successful debut record 'DNA' in 2012 where it reached number three in the UK and also took the Stateside for the first time as the album hit number four on the Billboard 200 which made Little Mix the first girl group to have their first album hit the top five since Danity Kane in 2006 as well as attaining the highest debut Billboard position by a British female group, smashing the record previously held by girl power icons the Spice Girls with their 1996 effort, 'Spice'.
Black Magic at the BRITs
The group showed the rest of the world who the real girl bosses were with their iconic first performance on the BRITs stage of number one single 'Black Magic'. Their performance at the 2016 ceremony showcased the girls in all their glory showing how they had clearly survived the dreaded reality TV musical act curse. The song was also nominated for British Single and British Artist Video in the same year.
At the height of their success the girls we’re also navigating some pretty tough public break-ups. Perrie navigated her way through the breakdown of her engagement to One Direction star Zayn Malik, while Jesy Nelson dealt with her engagement to Rixton singer Jake Roche ending in late 2016.
Little Mix went back to how it all started in 2020 with the launch of their own singing competition series 'Little Mix: The Search'. The BBC talent search featured Little Mix as judges putting singers together to form a variety of different groups who competed for the chance to support them on their next tour. The winners of the show, Since September, beat five other competitors to win and get the chance to join Little Mix on tour.
In December 2020 fans worst fears came true when Jesy decided to depart the band following a period of absence from the group. After citing struggles with her mental health and the pressures of being in a girl group Jesy walked away from the other girls seemingly on good terms to begin with. However following the release of her debut solo single 'Boyz' with Nicki Minaj, tensions simmered and Jesy admitted she was no longer in contact with the other girls.
In 2021, fans were left beaming with joy when both Perrie and Leigh-Anne revealed their pregnancies within days of each other, with their partners Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andre Gray. The pair proudly displayed their baby bumps on the 2021 BRIT Awards red carpet in stunning white gowns. In an even bigger shock Leigh-Anne went onto reveal she had given birth to twins resulting in three Little Mix babies all born ready to become the next generation of the Mix.
Olivia is nominated in the Artist, Favourite Female Pop Artist, and New Artist of the Year categories, while 'drivers license' is up for Favourite Trending Song, Music Video, and Pop Song, and her song 'Sour' is shortlisted for Favourite Pop Album, putting her in with a good chance of breaking the record for most wins for a first-time nominee, which is currently held by Justin Bieber and Olivia Newton-John with four each.

Olivia will contest the Artist of the Year Awards against The Weeknd, last year's winner Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, BTS, and Drake.
Taylor and Ariana will also compete for Female Pop Artist against Olivia, Doja Cat, and Dua Lipa, while the Male Pop Artist will see Justin Bieber attempt to take the accolade for the second year in a row if he can beat off competition from The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Drake, and Lil Nas X.
The Weeknd is also up for Favourite Male R&B Artist, as well Favourite Music Video and Pop Song for 'Save Your Tears' and Favorite Latin Song for 'Hawai', his collaboration with Maluma.
Taylor currently holds the record for most AMA wins of all time with 32, so will be hoping to add to her total again at the ceremony, at which her record 'evermore' is also up for Favorite Pop Album.
