The complaint made after Joe Lycett's June show in Belfast is the only report to police following a comedy show at three of the city's biggest venues in the last five years.

Belfast Live contacted police to find out how many complaints had been made at the Waterfront Hall, Ulster Hall and SSE Arena since 1 January 2018.

The complaint against Mr Lycett was the single instance that police had been contacted about.

The response from the PSNI said that "one complaint regarding entertainment at Waterfront Hall was made between January 2018 to the 19th of July 2022".

"The complaint mentioned above was in relation to showing a pseudo indecent image," the response read.

"No further action was taken concerning this complaint."

The Birmingham comedian took the complaint in good spirit at the time, tweeting a surprised reaction having been contacted by the police.

He said he had been asked by the PSNI to explain what was included in the joke, allowing him to write "giant donkey d***" in his response.

He said: "So someone came to my show a few weeks ago and was offended by one of the jokes. And their perfectly understandable response to this was to call the f*****g police.

"To be fair to them the fuzz were very nice about it all but they felt they had a duty to investigate."

He also said the joke remains "firmly and proudly" part of his show and adds that it's "one of the best I've ever written".
