The first pictures from Taika Waititi's upcoming film Next Goal Wins, starring Michael Fassbender, are here.

The movie, which is based on true events, follows the American Samoa football team after they hired coach Thomas Rongen in 2001 to help reverse their fortunes after losing 31-0 to Australia.

Fassbender (Prometheus, Steve Jobs, X-Men: First Class) stars as Rongen. Elisabeth Moss plays Rongen's ex-wife and Will Arnott will play a fictional football executive.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the project, Waititi compared the film to 1993 classic Cool Runnings, calling it a "story is about the worst soccer team in the world".

"The story is about the worst soccer team in the world, who famously experienced the biggest loss in an international match against Australia, 31-0, which is about a goal every four minutes," he said. "I just love underdog stories. Most of my films are about people who live on the margins, or are a little bit left out, and it just fit right in for me.

"It's a true story, but it's got all the elements that all the great sports films have. It's basically the Cool Runnings of soccer."

Waititi added that he'd been inspired to make the film after watching the 2014 documentary of the same name, saying: "Years ago, I watched it and couldn't believe I'd never heard of this story before.

"I'd never made a sports film before, and I really wanted to try that out."

Next Goal Wins hits cinemas in April 2023.
