Gillingham are said to have not yet responded to a six figure bid for their midfielder Kyle Dempsey from Bolton Wanderers, as per a recent report by The Bolton News.

The 26-year-old is said to be one of the club’s chief targets this window, with a substantial bid for his services being said to have been lodged last week.

However the Gills are yet to respond to the offer from their Sky Bet League One counterparts, which means things are at a stand still until a clear answer is given by the Kent side.

Part of the delay is said to have been as a result of Steve Evans being sacked as the club’s manager, with Gills currently searching for a replacement for thew Scotsman at Priestfield.

"From what I've heard" - Transfer insider drops huge Wolves claim on Ruben Neves' future

Ian Evatt believes that Bolton Wanderers will be a completely different team by the end of the January transfer window and reiterated his belief that the Whites will be a Premier League club again in five years. Dempsey – who is currently the Gillingham captain – has under six months left to run on his existing deal at the club and is due to leave on a free transfer next summer if fresh terms cannot be agreed with the hierarchy.

The Verdict

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with this deal, with Dempsey being a player that is amongst one of the best in his position in League One.

There is no doubt that the Gills won’t want to lose their captain at this crucial stage of the season but at the same time they may not have a choice over whether to sell or not if Bolton his their valuation of the midfielder.

Wanderers have shown a willingness to put their money where their mouth is this month and seem determined to improve the squad in whichever area they can.

The hope will be now that they can make a breakthrough in negotiations for the 26-year-old over the coming week as they seek to agree a deal with the Gills.
