Geneve (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated Monday that the risk related to the Omicron Variant of the Coronavirus SARS- COV-2 was "very high" globally, especially because of the great probability that it is spreading around the world.

In a technical note addressed to its 194 Member States, made public at night, the organization based in Geneva stresses that the many mutations characteristic of this variant could give it an advantage to escape the immune response (post-vaccination or post -Infection) or increased transmissibility, suggesting a "high" risk that it spreads more globally. It therefore advocates an acceleration of CVIV-19 vaccination, particularly the most vulnerable populations and enjoins its member states to ensure that mitigation plans in place to preserve the systems of health.

"Omicron is characterized by an unprecedented number of mutations of the Spike protein (the one that allows the virus to enter the cells and which is the target of the antibodies produced by the organization-NDLR), some of which are of concern for their impact Potential on the trajectory of the pandemic ", emphasizes WHO.

Moreover, preliminary data suggest that there may be an increased risk of reinfection with the Omicron variant, compared to previous variants that WHO had deemed concern.

In view of these various observations, WHO estimates that future epidemic outbreaks of CIVID-19 are possible and that they could have "severe consequences" in some areas. For all these reasons, the global risk related to the Omicron Concern variant is "very high".

The UN Health Agency specifies that new data should arrive in the coming weeks and to better understand the potential exhaust mechanisms of the Omicron variant for immunization acquired by vaccination or after a previous contamination.
