After the eruption, Tonga 's main island was blanketed in ash and its western coastline is said to be devastated. Up to 80,000 people there could be affected. "We're getting sketchy information, but it looks like the cable has been cut," the Southern Cross Cable Network's networks director Dean Veverka told the AFP news agency. "It could take up to two weeks to get it repaired. The nearest cable-laying vessel is in Port Moresby," he added, referring to the Papua New Guinea capital, more than 4,000 km (2,500 miles) from Tonga .

Paris (Reuters) - France stands ready to help the population of Tonga Islands after the tsunami triggered by the eruption of a submarine volcano that struck the archipelago Saturday, announced Monday the door -PAROLE of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"France stands ready to meet the most urgent needs of the population, via the Franz Regional Coordination Mechanism for Humanitarian Assistance in the event of a natural disaster," he said at a press point.
The Franz Mechanism refers to a tripartite agreement signed in 1992 which associates France, Australia and New Zealand to enable humanitarian assistance to South Pacific countries struck by natural disasters.
