Carl Phillips has published 16 volumes of poetry, the most recent being Then the War: And Selected Poems 2007-2020 (FSG). Two of them, Wild Is the Wind (2018) and Double Shadow (2001), won the L.A. Times Book Prize. From The Devotions (1998) and The Rest of Love: Poems (2004) were both finalists for the National Book Award. His many accolades include the 2021 Jackson Poetry Prize, the Griffin Poetry Prize in 2014, and the Lambda Literary Award for Best Poetry in 2001.
For Oprah Daily, Phillips reads “Fixed Shadow, Moving Water” from Then the War. The collection was released in the UK on February 24th, the day Russia invaded Ukraine, making its title seem prescient. Phillips was, however, thinking of Greek tragedies, which he studied at Harvard as a classics major. He is a professor at Washington University in St. Louis, the city where Michael Brown was shot and killed by police in 2014. Brown’s killing was an inflection point in racial disparity discussions and the continued marginalization of Black people in America. Of this poem, Phillips says he was contemplating the pressure on poets to be political, on how much is politicized, and, also, the degree to which tenderness can be its own force.
Why the Internet Swears By Rice Water for Smooth, Shiny Hair
The DIY has been around for centuries, but does it work on all hair types? If you've spent all your monies on hair supplements or hair growth shampoos that, sadly, didn't give you the results you wanted, you might be desperate eager to find a cheap DIY to try instead. Well, ever heard of rice-water hair treatments? Because if you spend any time on the internet, you certainly will sooner or later.“The use of rice water is an anecdotal but long-living beauty ritual in ancient Asian culture,” says trichologist Bridgette Hill. “Rice-water enthusiasts believe rice water detangles their hair, makes hair smoother and shinier, and grows the hair longer.

Phillips’s writing cannot be distilled in one sentence, but several words come to mind when considering the poet—erotic, experimental, cerebral--are just a few. To read his work is to understand his continuous striving and searching for meaning in a world that can be as tender as it can be violent.
His publishers describe Then the War as “luminous testimony to the power of self-reckoning and to Carl Phillips as an ever-changing, necessary voice in contemporary poetry.”
Phillips is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Library of Congress. He was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2006 and inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
