The shooting occurred at approximately 6 p.m. ET on W. 135th Street near Malcolm X Boulevard. The New York Police Department (NYPD) simply called the shooting a "police incident" and urged pedestrians and motorists to seek an alternate route.
The officers were responding to a domestic dispute involving a mother and son, according to a report from WLNY-TV. Shots reportedly broke out as soon as the officers arrived on the scene.

Officers then engaged the suspect, who was reportedly hiding in a back room when the skirmish broke out. The suspect ended up being shot by a third officer who, according to NBC News, had only been on the force for about a year.
The suspect, who has not been identified, reportedly died at the scene, although this has not been confirmed by the NYPD.
The two officers were reportedly taken to Harlem Hospital, where they both later succumbed to their injuries despite doctor's efforts, according to reports. One of them was reportedly shot in the face, according to local news outlets.
While an NYPD spokesperson would only confirm the shooting, Fox News was the first to report that both officers had in fact died.
Neither of the officers' identities has been revealed at this time in order to protect their family's privacy.

Fabien Levy, the press secretary for New York City Mayor Eric Adams, tweeted that the mayor had been notified of the shooting. He was speaking at the city's Central Synagogue in Midtown when the shots rang out, and will head to Harlem Hospital afterward, Levy said.
Still images taken from a new helicopter showed a massive police presence at the scene of the shooting, with dozens of police officers being seen in the area. Yellow crime scene tape could also be seen being set up.
The two officers were the fourth and fifth in the NYPD to be shot in the line of fire in 2022. This also marks the third shooting of an officer in the same week, after a beat cop and detective were shot on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
An NYPD official told Newsweek that the department would be holding a press conference at Harlem Hospital later Friday evening.
