Entertainment: James Gunn Responds To Henry Cavill Superman TV Rumors

Will James Gunn Being Fired From Marvel End Up Saving DC?

Will James Gunn Being Fired From Marvel End Up Saving DC? James Gunn being fired from Marvel Studios in 2018 was a blessing in disguise for his future career at DC, and it could end up saving the DCEU. After his initial run with Marvel ended, he made the transition to DC and developed The Suicide Squad movie and the Peacemaker series for HBO Max. After Disney rehired him to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special), Warner Bros. Discovery enlisted Gunn and producer Peter Safran to be the new co-heads of the DC Extended Universe.

DC Films CEO James Gunn forcefully knocked down reports that Henry Cavill’s return as Superman to the DC Extended Universe was going to be much more substantial than originally thought, and would include appearances in DC TV shows. An obviously-annoyed Gunn took to Twitter to respond to a report from another movie news site about Cavill’s future, insisting that “NO ONE knows what's happening at DC Studios right now other than me & Peter (Safran).”

Gunn then told the movie site, Geekosity, that “I'm not sure if you're purposely lying or being taken advantage of by someone lying to you,” saying that any specific reports of Cavill’s future in the DCEU are not true, as any plans are being kept between he and co-CEO Peter Safran. “That would include writing up any new contracts for anyone at this point,” he said.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director is active on Twitter, and in the past wasn’t afraid to go one-on-one in debates or disagreements. After his hiring as DC Films CEO, some might have thought Gunn would be less engaging with fans or media sites, but he appears ready to take them on.

The reports James Gunn was referring to stated that Warner Bros. Discovery was going to maximize Henry Cavill’s return in every way possible, including sequels to Man of Steel, crossover appearances in other DCEU films, and even appearances in DC TV shows. Appearances by Superman in both Shazam! and the HBO Suicide Squad spinoff series Peacemaker had to avoid showing the character’s face, as Cavill was not called upon to reprise the role. His cameo in Black Adam, however, indicates a change of direction and a willingness by DC Films to showcase their biggest assest at the moment.

Why Superman's Next Movie Should Be Directed by James Gunn

Why Superman's Next Movie Should Be Directed by James Gunn Man of Steel 2 can combine dark and more traditional elements through a director that gets both themes: recently hired DC Studios head James Gunn. The hunt has begun to find the director for Man of Steel 2, but hiring James Gunn to handle the movie might be the right move. He has experience with DC and Marvel properties, not to mention other superhero films. This experience could be synergized to create a movie for Superman that's both in the spirit of more recent takes while also respecting the history of the classic hero.

Gunn’s denial of any Superman rumors, although not new, has been met with criticism by fans who feel he could end all of the wild speculation by simply giving some concrete plan for Henry Cavill’s future. Simply saying that more Superman solo films are coming, or confirming a crossover or two wouldn’t spoil anything, and give fans something to talk about. Considering Marvel has announced films up to four years in advance, a model James Gunn wants to emulate, now would be a good time to start by putting the rumors to bed.

CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav has already voiced his approval of Henry Cavill as Superman in the DCEU, and using him in multiple DC properties would certainly meet with his approval. Cameos in TV shows certainly wouldn’t tarnish the Superman brand, and provide more cohesiveness to the universe. Films like The Flash and Aquaman 2, which have seen some controversy due to the antics of stars Ezra Miller and Amber Heard, could certainly use a Superman fly-by to settle things down.

How James Gunn's Indie Roots Could Influence DC's Future

How James Gunn's Indie Roots Could Influence DC's Future James Gunn's indie roots and signature filmmaking style could play into how he runs DC Studios as co-CEO.It's an incredibly inspired and unexpected decision from Warner Bros. Discovery, but one that makes a lot of sense. With Gunn's two smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy movies at Marvel and acclaimed DC projects, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, the man has become an incredibly valuable asset in the world of comic book movies. With his recent directing credits, it's not entirely random that he would be put into this high of a position, but it's definitely a bit of a shock.

With Henry Cavill walking away from The Witcher series, he seems to be clearing his schedule for the future. Having James Gunn fill in a few blanks on that schedule would go a long way in winning fans back.

Henry Cavill's Superman Return Already In Trouble? .
The world was ecstatic when it had been announced that Henry Cavill would be returning as Superman for DC, but now there is some not-so-great news that could throw a wrench in his long-awaited comeback. Industry insiders close to the situation have reported that Cavill’s overall deal to return for the many Superman projects is currently not in place at all, and no writer or director is attached for this new story, which refutes previous reports that the DC Films division was beginning to hear pitches about a potential new movie.
