She had been one of the first black women to have a main role in a television series. In America in the 1960s, when Star Trek was broadcast for the first time, Nichelle Nichols quickly became an icon for her role as a communications officer at the USS Enterprise. A black, intelligent woman, occupying a position of responsibility, the image was extremely rare at that time.
