The bombing also wounded 23 others, mostly policemen, officials said. Ghulam Azfer Mehser, a senior police officer, said the attack happened as the policemen were heading to the polio workers, part of a nationwide vaccination drive launched Monday. The blast was so powerful that it toppled the truck carrying police officers into a ravine, he said, adding that the bombing also damaged a nearby car carrying members of a family.

No indication of the mobile of this attack was given by the authorities of the archipelago, the largest Muslim majority in the world which has been in the grip of Islamist activism for years.

The explosion occurred around 8:00 a.m. (01:00 you) in the premises of the Astana Anyar police station in Bandung, capital of the most populous province in Indonesia, killing the author suicide bombing.

A second explosive device was then found nearby and was safely triggered by police deminers, according to the same source.

"The assailant insisted to approach our agents by brandishing a knife and suddenly an explosion occurred," he described.

The attack left a dead - a police officer - and ten wounded including a civilian who was passing by.

The penal code deemed "unfaithful"

The author of the attack, whose identity has not been revealed, landed at the police station on a blue motorcycle, a sheet of white paper with a message stuck to his vehicle.

The message condemned the Indonesian penal code as an "unfaithful" law and invited to war the police, according to the police.
