New coordinator Dirk Koetters offense looked lost in the first half, but it has produced with a potent rushing attack in the second half.
Plawecki has spent the past three seasons in Boston, with much of that time backing up Christian Vázquez. The right-handed hitting backstop performed well in a limited role between 2020-21, but he’s had a rough go of things in 2022. Through 173 plate appearances, Plawecki carries a .219/.291/.290 line with one home run. He’s made plenty of contact, but he hasn’t made a huge impact from a power perspective. Boston dealt Vázquez to the Astros at the trade deadline, but they also brought in the lefty-hitting Reese McGuire in a subsequent trade with the White Sox.

A lot has happened since Boise State’s disappointing 27-10 loss at UTEP a week ago. A new offensive coordinator in former Broncos head coach Dirk Koetter, who took over for the fired Tim Plough. A new starting quarterback in Taylen Green, who moves into the position after senior Hank Bachmeier entered the transfer portal.
But at halftime against San Diego State, it was the same old story for Boise State’s offense. The Broncos were down 13-0, the second time they’ve been blanked in a first half this season (Oregon State was the other game). They have just 33 points in five first halves this year, and 20 of those came against FCS UT Martin in the team’s only other home game so far in 2022.

Not only that, but Green was replaced by Sam Vidlak at quarterback in the second quarter. Nothing the Broncos did produced any points.
The second half has been a different story, and it started with the defense, which got an interception on a horrible pass from Braxton Burmeister. JL Skinner then knocked Burmeister out of the game with a big hit, and the Aztecs’ offense has been a disaster.
There are losses and bad losses, and then there’s Boise State’s 27-10 loss to UTEP on Friday night at Sun Bowl Stadium. Does it qualify as one of the worst in program history? It certainly has all the hallmarks of a mind-boggling defeat. Consider the following: The Broncos’ defense, which entered No. 14 in the nation against the run and No. 2 on third down, surrendered 199 rushing yards and eight third-down conversions to the Miners. Boise State opponents were a combined 6-for-38 on third down before Friday’s game and averaging just 76.3 rushing yards.

Right guard Ben Dooley will miss his fifth straight game with an undisclosed injury. The good news is freshman Mason Randolph is healthy and dressed tonight. Randolph started at right guard in the season opener against Oregon State but has missed the past three games.
Freshman Roger Carreon started at right guard last week at UTEP.
Conservatives capture school board seats with money from national political action committees, high-profile endorsements and local parent groups. The sometimes little-noticed races present an opportunity, Republican leaders say, to oversee what children are taught and advance a broader conservative agenda. Frustration with pandemic restrictions, teaching about civil rights and allowing accommodations for transgender students are among the animating issues for GOP-backed candidates, many of them new to politics or education policy.

Center Kekaniokoa Holomalia-Gonzalez is also out tonight. He was a healthy scratch last week. Texas Tech transfer Will Farrar will likely start at center for the second week in a row.
Junior college transfers Deven Wright, an edge rusher, and defensive end Cortez Hogans Jr. are also out for undisclosed reasons. Hogans has yet to be active for a game this season.

How a forgotten San Francisco ballpark nearly destroyed the western half of the city .
There were signs that San Francisco’s Ewing Field was cursed from the very start. During an Opening Day pregame celebration for the 18,000-seat baseball park on May 16, 1914, owners brought a giant floral horseshoe as a totem of good luck. The frigid wind blew it to the dirt so many times, they just left it there through the ceremony. “You ought to call it icicle field,” one fan told Chronicle sports editor Harry B. Smith. “It was freezing cold,” Smith wrote the next day, “just about as bad as you’ll ever find it in that neck of the woods, and it is quite within reason that it interfered with the quality of the pitching.” Ewing Field is all but forgotten in time.
