Bats come to life as Red Sox rout Braves in battle of leaders The Red Sox posted an 8-2 victory over Atlanta In their first visit to Sun Trust Park,.ATLANTA — The Red Sox, shut out by the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, were scoreless through four innings against the Atlanta Braves Monday afternoon and didn’t have a hit against rookie Touki Toussaint.

Astros rough up Eduardo Rodriguez, beat Red Sox again

Astros rough up Eduardo Rodriguez, beat Red Sox again The Houston Astros — and a large number of their boisterous fans — have come into Fenway Park this weekend and given the Red Sox much to think about, if not be concerned with. The Red Sox’ gaudy record has looked meaningless through two games against the defending World Series champions.

In his second start since coming off the disabled list, Chris Sale threw three scoreless innings against the New York Mets on Sunday. It was just what the Red Sox wanted to see from their ace.

Then came the disturbing sight of Most Valuable Player candidate Mookie Betts leaving the field in the seventh inning with what was described by the team as “soreness” on his left side.

BOX SCORE:  RED SOX 4, METS 3

Betts will be evaluated further.

The player who replaced Betts in the lineup, Tzu-Wei Lin, scored the winning run in the eighth inning as the Sox beat the Mets, 4-3, before a sellout crowd of 36,526 at Fenway Park.

Now 103-47, the Sox have won six of seven and reduced their magic number to win the American League East to two as the Yankees lost, 3-2, against Toronto in New York.

The swing adjustment that helped Mookie Betts reach new heights

The swing adjustment that helped Mookie Betts reach new heights The blast off of Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman on Thursday night seemed to travel to the peaks of New York’s skyscrapers and pose against the Yankee Stadium facade, the sort of moonshot that typically characterizes the foremost power hitters in the game. That the homer came in that form, and in that park, couldn’t have been more appropriate in capturing the essence of the transcendent 2018 season of Mookie Betts. After all, in a season filled with dazzling in-game highlights, one of the most revealing moments of Betts’s season had come not in a game but instead four hours prior to a contest on May 10.Betts was hitting .347 with a .

On a day Sale matched up with Mets ace Jacob deGrom, the Sox were able to manufacture enough offense to win the rubber game of the series.

Rafael Devers and Christian Vazquez had singles against deGrom in the third inning. Betts followed with a sacrifice fly and Brock Holt with a two-run homer to right center.

deGrom was otherwise untouchable. He went seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts.

The Red Sox bullpen allowed two runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh.

The Sox took the lead against Seth Lugo. Lin doubled off the wall in left, advanced to third in a fly ball by Holt and scored on another by Benintendi.

Brandon Workman (6-0) worked a scoreless inning for the win. With Craig Kimbrel needing a day off, Steven Wright was used to close and got his first career save.

Wright has pitched seven scoreless innings in six appearances since coming off the disabled list on Sept. 1.

Cora’s chaotic entry to Red Sox reshaped his career

Cora’s chaotic entry to Red Sox reshaped his career For Alex Cora, the allure of Boston as his first managerial outpost was compelling. Boston represented everything about where he wanted to be. He couldn’t imagine a more desirable destination, to the point that he turned down chances to interview with other clubs this offseason while trying to launch his managerial career in Boston.

The Sox finished 16-4 in interleague games. They are 32-8 against the National League the last two years.

Sale allowed one hit and struck out one. He threw 42 pitches, 27 for strikes.

It was a jump in workload for Sale, who threw one inning and 26 pitches against Toronto on Tuesday. He had been on the DL with shoulder inflammation.

With time for two more starts in the regular season, Sale should be able to advance to seven innings and roughly 80 pitches. That would have him ready to pitch without restriction in Game 1 of the postseason, likely on Oct. 5.

Sale hit 96.8 miles per hour with his four-seam fastball and sat comfortably at 94-95 m.p.h.

After retiring the first five batters he faced, Sale allowed a single by Michael Conforto, who was then thrown out stealing second by Christian Vazquez to end the inning.

Sale has thrown 32 consecutive scoreless innings since July 6. His earned run average is 1.92.

If the Red Sox keep Sale on a five-day schedule, he will next pitch on Friday in Cleveland.

Even with a remarkable 108 victories and the top seed in the American League in their pocket, the Red Sox will find themselves on relatively even terrain (home-field advantage notwithstanding) with the Yankees or Athletics when their American League Division Series gets underway on Friday.
