Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James missed 26 games during the 2020-21 NBA season because of a high right ankle sprain and seemed to tweak that same ankle in this past Sunday's 121-118 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Lakers coach Frank Vogel understandably isn't taking any chances regarding the long-term health of the four-time champion.

According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, James is sitting out Tuesday's matchup against the San Antonio Spurs due to his sore right ankle. Vogel added the Lakers are taking "a marathon approach" with James, who will turn 37 years old in December.

Lakers vs. Suns Preview and Game Thread: A rematch between playoff foes

Lakers vs. Suns Preview and Game Thread: A rematch between playoff foes The Lakers will be taking on the Suns in their first meaningful matchup since the Suns eliminated the Lakers from the 2021 NBA Playoffs. The Suns will also be coming into Friday’s game winless as they also let go of a lead against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday. Nikola Jokic and his team won 110-98 in that one after the Suns had as large as a 16-point lead right before halftime.

James played in the opening three games of the season before Tuesday's development but couldn't prevent the Lakers from beginning the campaign with back-to-back losses ahead of the victory over Memphis. Thus far, James is averaging 26.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per contest.

The Lakers will be back on the court Wednesday for a matchup at the Oklahoma City Thunder, so Vogel may rest LeBron until at least Friday's home game versus the Cleveland Cavaliers, James' former club.

"He's just day to day, and he'll get evaluated again tomorrow and see what the soreness is like and make a decision then," Vogel said about James potentially playing Wednesday.

LeBron James says leg sore after collision, hopes to be ready for Tuesday vs. Spurs

LeBron James says leg sore after collision, hopes to be ready for Tuesday vs. Spurs LeBron James is hoping he'll be ready to go for the next game after avoiding serious injury during a collision under the basket that was eerily similar to last year. James collided with Memphis Grizzlies forward Desmond Bane in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' 121-118 win on Sunday night and remained on the floor while he was seen by trainers. Unlike the high ankle sprain last year that kept him out of 26 games, the 19-year veteran was able to return to the game after the right leg concern. "The first thing I was thinking to myself was, 'Not again,'" James told reporters, via ESPN. "Because obviously it was almost similar but not the same kind of play.
