Brent Venables , 13 years on the Sooner staff , approached about being Holgorsen's defensive chief. And Clemson reportedly also smelling fresh meat, on the prowl for Venables . Which is not how Bob Stoops wanted this staff upheaval to go down. Stoops, without a coaching dismissal in his Oklahoma reign, tried to gently cut defensive backfield coach Willie Does Venables accept a demotion to stay in what has become the only home his four children have ever known, or does he seek to revive his wounded football career with adventures elsewhere? Bob Stoops hopes for the former with Venables .

Josh Heupel, Tennessee coach : A former national championship winning quarterback and OU assistant, Heupel’s relationship with the school has been strained since being let go in 2014. Mark Stoops, Kentucky coach : Few coaches have done more in a hard power conference job than Bob Stoops’ younger brother, including nine wins this season.

Venables was the long time defensive coordinator under Bob Stoops.

With Lincoln Riley off to USC, Oklahoma becomes the newest marquee job opening in a crazy coaching carousel. One name that has some former Sooners buzzing: former Oklahoma and current Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Venables has resisted jumping into a head coaching position. The opportunity in Norman could be a good one, and two former Oklahoma stars he coached late in his tenure want to see him land the job.

Defensive backs Tony Jefferson and Aaron Colvin each played for Venables during the last few years of his Oklahoma tenure, before carving out NFL careers. Both have taken to Twitter to back the idea of Venables to Oklahoma.

Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State odds, prediction, betting trends for Bedlam

Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State odds, prediction, betting trends for Bedlam The line on Bedlam has flipped, meaning the Sooners are underdogs. Will Oklahoma State break a six-game losing streak in the rivalry?Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. The game will be televised on ABC.

I never understood why Venables was always seemingly the scapegoat in Oklahoma , but I'm really enjoying watching him kick ass and get the respect he deserves. Just like any big program that's not in the National Title picture every year, the fans were getting complacent with the Sooners recent successes and change was needed. I don't necessarily believe he was fired/ran out of town because anyone thought he was a bad coach or that he wasn't respected, it was just that the Sooners weren't competing for titles anymore.

However, current defensive coordinator Brent Venables might not be around to share that title. According to Dave Sittler of the Tulsa World , Venables has been offered the defensive coordinator position at West Virginia and is also on the short list at Clemson. Venables could share defensive coordinating duties with Joe DeForrest, who was just hired from Oklahoma State but his official title has not yet been announced. The decision for Venebles would come down to his best opportunity. If he shares the defensive coordinator position with Stoops, his play-calling duties are likely done.

While playing under Venables, Jefferson earned Freshman All-American and Big 12 co-defensive freshman of the year honors in 2010. He spent time with the Cardinals and Ravens, and is currently on the 49ers practice squad.

Colvin was a two-time All-Big 12 player after Venables's time in Norman, but played for him during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. He went on to be a fourth-round pick by the Jaguars, and has spent time with the Texans and Washington Football Team.

So far, there are no strong reports connecting Venables—or any significant name—to the opening. Oklahoma president Joe Harroz said that he and athletic director Joe Castiglione were blindsided by Riley's departure. Bob Stoops has stepped in as the interim coach while the program looks for a new full-time coach.

Since Venables , the Sooners haven’t claimed a first-team defensive All-American, a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year or a national award finalist. And this season, with Mike Stoops recruits finally littering the secondary, the Sooners ranked only ahead of Iowa State among Big 12 teams in defending the pass. Following a catastrophic 2012 defensive season loaded with highlights of Tavon Austin and Johnny Manziel carving up the Sooners , Oklahoma finally seemed to be turning that elusive corner defensively under Mike Stoops last year.

Brent Venables – Coaching Career. Venables served as a coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 to 2011. He was in the position of associate head coach , defensive coordinator, and linebackers. Venables coached the Linebackers from 1996-1998. He was also the Defensive Run Game Coordinator in 1998. He had served as a Graduate Assistant earlier from 1993-1995. Brent Venables was one of five finalists for the Broyles Award for the nation’s top assistant coach in 2006.

Venables is a natural name to speculate about. His Oklahoma roots run pretty deep, after serving under Stoops from 1999–2011 and led a BCS National Championship-winning defense in 2000. At Clemson, he's been Dabo Swinney's right-hand man, winning a pair of College Football Playoff national championships.

Whether Venables is ready for a head coaching job is a major question. Last summer, he admitted to ESPN's David Hale that he was closer to taking a job last offseason than years prior, but that he's "happy," adding, "You have to be careful not to screw up happy."
