Falcons' Cordarrelle Patterson game-time decision Thursday vs. Patriots with ankle injury
The Falcons weren't yet willing to rule Patterson out as of Tuesday evening, and that remains the case roughly 24 hours ahead of kickoff. According to Nick Shook of the NFL's website, Atlanta head coach Arthur Smith said that Patterson will be a game-time decision Thursday evening. As noted by Shook and ESPN stats, Patterson has evolved into the Falcons' top ball-carrier out of the backfield, leads the team with five touchdown receptions, and has accumulated 776 yards from scrimmage and seven total scores. Interestingly, it remains unclear who would serve as Atlanta's RB1 on Thursday if Patterson can't play.
Falcons wide receiver/running back/returner Cordarrelle Patterson wants to add another position to his resume, and the Falcons are open to it.
Patterson has said this season that he would like to get some playing time on defense, and has a goal of getting an interception. In Sunday’s win over the Jaguars, Patterson did play one snap on defense, and after the game head coach Arthur Smith said contributing on defense is something Patterson can legitimately do.
“He got his defensive snap,” Smith said of Patterson. “I may put him on the depth chart next week at free safety
The NFL playoff picture is a mess – here are reasons to believe in and doubt every team in the field
A recent run of upsets has cast doubt on which teams in the NFL are true contenders. Here's the case for – and against – the current playoff field. The Tennessee Titans hold the edge in the AFC with an 8-2 record. The Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens trail at 6-3, leading a crowded field that includes the Kansas City Chiefs (6-4), Pittsburgh Steelers (5-3-1), New England Patriots (6-4) and the Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals, who all own 5-4 records.
Sure enough, the team’s official depth chart now lists him as a backup safety in addition to his roles on offense and special teams.
Falcons defensive coordinator Dean Pees said the team does have a package that includes Patterson on the field at safety, although Pees added that he hopes not to have to use that package. No one should expect Patterson to be a regular part of the secondary rotation, but there’s not much on the football field that Patterson can’t do.
