The Twins handed Musgrove (8-4) his fourth straight loss. Musgrove, who earned his first All-Star selection this year, and the Padres are on the cusp of finalizing a $100 million, five-year contract that would start next year.
Marlins’ bullpen generating trade interest
Just as Detroit will be receiving interest in a huge chunk of its bullpen, Miami figures to have several relievers on the block. Longtime Marlins beat writer Joe Frisaro tweets that the Fish have gotten interest on lefties Tanner Scott and Steven Okert as well as right-handers Dylan Floro and Anthony Bass. © Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports Miami Marlins relief pitcher Tanner Scott (66) has the highest price tag out of the team's bullpen.
The Padres got a bad break in the seventh. Trailing 2-1 and with rookie C.J. Abrams at second base on a one-out infield single and throwing error by shortstop Correa, Jurickson Profar’s sharp grounder hit second base umpire Jerry Layne, rolled several feet away and was ruled a dead ball.
Abrams almost certainly would have scored had Profar's ball gone through the infield, but he had to stay at second. Manny Machado struck out and Eric Hosmer popped up to end the inning.
Correa then homered to straightaway center field with one out in the eighth off Adrian Morejon for a 4-1 lead. It was his 13th. The Twins added on with an RBI single by Jose Miranda, a run-scoring double by Nick Gordon and a throwing error by Abrams to make it 7-1. © Provided by Associated Press – Sports Minnesota Twins' Carlos Correa, right, is congratulated by third base coach Tommy Watkins as he rounds the bag after hitting a two-run home run against the San Diego Padres in the eighth inning of a baseball game, Saturday, July 30, 2022, in San Diego. San Diego's Jurickson Profar hit a three-run homer off Tyler Duffey with one out in the ninth, his 10th.
Astros showing interest in Christian Vazquez, Ji-Man Choi
The Astros have reportedly been in the mix for upgrades at catcher and at first base, prominently connected to both Willson Contreras and Josh Bell. However, while those two represent the arguable top options at those respective positions, the asking price on both has been high, and Houston is exploring alternative options. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic writes this morning that the ’Stros “are focusing more on Vazquez” than Contreras at this point, adding that they’ve also expressed interest in Rays first baseman/designated hitter Ji-Man Choi.
Sonny Gray (6-3) allowed a solo home run to All-Star Manny Machado with two outs in the third, but otherwise kept the Padres in check through five innings. San Diego hit five home runs in a 10-1 rout Friday night, including a two-run shot by Machado. Gray allowed five hits while striking out five and walking one.
Musgrove hasn't won since June 16 at the Chicago Cubs. He allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, struck out eight and walked two.
Twins: Placed OF Max Kepler (broken right toe) and INF Miguel Sanó (left knee inflammation) on the 10-day injured list. Sanó had returned just four days earlier after missing 75 games following surgery in May to repair torn meniscus in the knee. Kepler was hurt when he was hit by a pitch at Detroit last Sunday. To take their spots on the roster, the Twins recalled outfielder Mark Contreras and selected the contract of infielder Tim Beckham from Triple-A St. Paul.

Former All-Star SS Paul DeJong could be activated by Cardinals this weekend .
The 28-year-old struggled to start the season with the Cardinals before eventually being sent down to Triple-A Memphis in May. In 24 games this season for St. Louis, DeJong batted .130/.209/.208 with a home run and seven RBI. DeJong has seemingly turned things around at the plate during his minor league stint. In 51 games for Memphis, DeJong batted .249/.313/.552 with 17 home runs and 54 RBI. An All-Star in 2019, DeJong has failed to regain that form since. After hammering 30 home runs and driving in 78 runs in 2019, DeJong has just 23 homers and 77 RBI over the past three seasons combined.
