After hours of negotiations, the federal and state governments have agreed that the applicable Corona measures will be extended until March 28th. Unlike previously planned, easing should no longer be linked to a seven-day incidence of 35. Instead, a step-by-step plan was adopted that provides for openings at an incidence of 50 and even 100. Merkel emphasized after the deliberations that she could only agree to this because an "emergency brake" had been drawn in at a value of 100. You are now entering a "new phase of the pandemic". If more than 100 people per 100,000 people become infected with the corona virus in a week, easing steps must be taken back after the decision.

Step-by-step opening planned

Among other things, the resolution stipulates that everyone can undergo a free Corona rapid test once a week from March 8th. Rapid tests are also to be used more in schools and in companies and then supplemented with self-rapid tests. The federal states want to open schools in the future without consulting the federal government. Contact restrictions will be relaxed from March 8th. In a first step, flower shops, bookstores and garden centers are to open nationwide.

After that, a step-by-step plan will be in place until April 4, which provides for 50 or 100 opening steps in various areas from retail, museums, sports to outdoor catering when the incidence is reached. Retailers should be able to fully reopen on April 5 at the earliest, but with hygiene requirements and personal restrictions. Merkel described the agreement as a binding framework for the federal states. But you could not rule out that individual countries would rush ahead again.

No relaxation for travel in Germany in lockdown - criticism from DRV

The German Travel Association (DRV) criticized the Corona resolutions. "It is unacceptable that due to the lack of tests and the far too slow vaccination process, we are forced to remain in lockdown for more months," said DRV President Norbert Fiebig of the Funke media group.

The Prime Ministers want to meet again with the Chancellor on March 22nd to talk about the rules for Easter. Then areas should also be discussed that were not given an open perspective.

What applies to private contacts

From March 8, a maximum of five people from two households may meet privately, not including children up to 14 years of age. What is new is: "Couples are considered one household." In regions with fewer than 35 new infections per week per 100,000 inhabitants, this can be extended to three households with a maximum of ten people.

The Latest: UK finds Brazilian virus variants, hunts others

The Latest: UK finds Brazilian virus variants, hunts others LONDON — Health officials in Britain have identified six cases of a highly contagious coronavirus strain first identified in the Brazilian city of Manaus -- including one in a person who has not been traced. Scientists say the variant is more transmissible and may be more resistant to existing vaccines than the original virus, and may be able to infect people who have previously had COVID-19. Direct flights from Brazil to the U.K. have been halted, but the newly identified cases have been linked to people who came to the U.K. from Brazil through other European cities in early February. The arrivals came days before the U.K.

If the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) rises to over 100 on three consecutive days within seven days, contacts are again limited to one household and one additional person. This "emergency brake" should also apply to other opening steps.

What applies to trips in Germany in lockdown?

For the Easter days, the appeal continues to refrain from “travel that is not absolutely necessary”. This includes private trips and visits - also from relatives. This also applies in Germany and for national day-trip excursions.

Germany extends border controls until March 17th.

The border controls at the crossings to the Czech Republic and the Austrian state of Tyrol are extended until March 17th.

This means that the prohibitions and rules for entry from there that have been in force since February 14th will remain unchanged. The federal government had declared the Czech Republic, Slovakia and large parts of Tyrol in Austria to be so-called virus variant areas. From there, only Germans and foreigners with a residence and residence permit in Germany are currently allowed to enter. There are exceptions for truck drivers and cross-border commuters with systemically relevant professions. You must have a negative corona test that is not older than 48 hours.

Restaurants, cultural and leisure facilities will remain closed for the time being.

Openings in the gastronomy, culture, events, travel and hotels sectors will be discussed in the next round on March 22nd.
