Emblematic spokesperson for the indigenous cause of Brazil, the cacique Raoni Metuktire was hospitalized at more than 90 years of age for a general weakness. His stable condition "deteriorated during the day" and "he would suffer from a hemorrhage of the digestive system".

Planète Amazone had previously announced the hospitalization in Colider of the old native chief due to a state of general weakness.

"He took a negative Covid test"

The cacique "began to be ill two weeks ago, with fever, diarrhea and vomiting" and was dehydrated.

While many natives have been infected by the Covid-19 sweeping through Brazil, "we thought of the coronavirus" , added the president of the NGO which organized fundraisers for the Kayapo people of cacique. But "he took a negative Covid test" , added Bruch.

The cacique with the famous labial plateau "feeds normally and needs a lot of rest" , according to Mr. Bruch.

Chief Raoni was apparently very affected by the death of his wife Bekwyjka on June 23 from a stroke. Bekwyjka had been his wife for over 60 years.

As Brazil nears the milestone of 80,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus , indigenous populations have been hit hard due among other things to weaker immunity: more than 16,000 indigenous people have been infected and 535 have died from it, according to data from APIB, the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil.

“Take advantage of this disease”

In June, the coronavirus killed a well-known cacique and defender of the Amazon rainforest, Paulinho Paiakan, aged around 65.

In a recent interview with AFP, the cacique Raoni accused the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro of wanting "to take advantage of this disease" to eliminate his people.

Since the coming to power in January 2019 of the far-right head of state, the old leader of the Kayapo does not mince words against the president, whose departure he has demanded and who has made contemptuous remarks towards the natives .
